Long Beach Police Chief Wally Hebeish to Retire Dec. 31
Long Beach's top cop is retiring at year's end. The city wants a new chief named by early 2027. Long Beach Police Chief Wally Hebeish is set to retire on Dec. 31, 2026, ending his nearly five-year tenure at the helm of the second largest police department in Los Angeles County. His departure sets off a nationwide search for his successor, with the department facing proposed budget reductions and staffing cuts. Hebeished began his career with the Orange County Sheriff's Department before joining the Long Beach Police Department in 1995. He was formally appointed chief in 2021 and officially became chief on Jan. 1, 2022. The city manager will conduct a nationwide recruitment process to identify candidates from both inside and outside the department. Despite the budget cuts, crime trends have improved, with murders down 23.7%, shootings down 36%, and violent crime down 9.2%.
