Long Beach could take another step this week toward finalizing its role during the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

The City Council on Tuesday, June 11, will consider approving a venue-use guarantee with the Los Angeles Organizing Committee for the 2028 Summer Games, which wold put four areas into consideration to host events.

Potential Long Beach venues being considered include the Long Beach Convention & Entertainment Center area, Marina Green and Alamitos Beach, the waterfront around the Belmont Shore beach area, and Marine Stadium, officials said.

The 2028 Olympics and Paralympics are scheduled to take place from July 14 to Aug. 27 that year in Los Angeles and surrounding areas, including Carson and Long Beach.

“By approving the Venue Use Guarantee, Long Beach is well-positioned to be the largest venue city outside of Los Angeles for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games,” Mayor Rex Richardson said in a statement. “We anticipate that our city will see a significantly larger event footprint for 2028 than in previous Olympics, ensuring Long Beach is featured on the world stage.”

Last month, Long Beach and neighboring Carson officially signed on as venue cities for the 2028 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games, also referred to as LA28.

The upcoming approval of Long Beach’s venue-use guarantee ensures the availability of these designated venues for all event needs and outlines the terms and conditions for venue usage, according to the staff report.

The guarantee also specifies that LA28 will reimburse all operational costs incurred in connection with the production of the events – such as costs of constructing overlays that may be used for things such as temporary structures, increased cleaning and waste management services, and enhanced security measures. Specific reimbursement terms will be detailed in subsequent agreements for each venue.

As LA28 develops its event plans, city staffers will receive more details on impacts to the community and access to public space. These plans will also require review and approval by the Coastal Commission and are subject to change, according to the staff report.

City staffers intend to conduct community outreach to discuss potential residential and business impacts. Outreach efforts will focus on addressing transportation and mobility plans, parking, and safety, along with hearing other concerns residents and business owners may have.

“The goal of the outreach,” the city staff report said, “is to ensure that the community is well informed about efforts to mitigate adverse effects and ensure the Games is a positive experience for all.”

Staffers have created a frequently asked questions document that provides preliminary information on potential impacts.

If the council approves the guarantee, Long Beach officials will continue to collaborate with LA28 to finalize specific dates and further refine the areas to facilitate preparation for the Summer Olympics while minimizing impacts on surrounding areas, officials said.

The Long Beach venues are slated to be finalized by October 2027, the staff report said.
