Overview
Long Beach has long been known for its youth culture, and in California it is ranked fifth after Los Angeles San Diego San Jose San Francisco and 34th in the U.S. It is the largest suburban city in the U.S., surpassing the major urban centers of major urban areas such as New Orleans, Louisiana (462,269) and Cleveland, Ohio (458,684). Other examples of large-scale suburban cities include Mesa in Arizona (437,454) and Arlington in Texas (359,467).
History
In the 19th century, Native American Tonva formed and lived in several villages. These villages all disappeared in the mid-1800s. It was in 1827 that settlers from the east set foot on this land. It became an official city in 1888, and the name of the city was determined as 'Long Beach.'
From the early period to the 1960s, it grew as a resort area on the coast. It was called 'Iowa on the coast' because there were many immigrants from Iowa and other Midwest states. Later, oil fields were found and developed into military and port cities.
It was Long Beach that many silent films were shot in the early stage of the history of the film. In 1933, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 hit the area, causing the city to suffer catastrophic damage. Many buildings, including schools, collapsed and killed as many as 120 people.
It is now one of the largest medium-sized cities in southern California, with its features not only as a port city, but also as an economic city, as well as a sightseeing city, and its main offices, hotels, tourist facilities and residential areas of large companies are adjacent to each other.

Economy
The city has important ports, oil fields, naval bases and tourist facilities, and Long Beach, which is a major transportation center, is a major economic city, with the development of the air, transport and freight industries including Boeing Co., Ltd., as well as the head office of banks, advertising agencies and cable television stations.
In recent years, the function of the head office of foreign companies is often established, and TABC, a Toyota Motor Corporation in the United States, and Seiko Epson's American base are also located in Long Beach. In addition, he is a well-developed medical care provider and an important employer of the city.
traffic
shipping
Long Beach is an important port between the United States and the Pacific Rim. It ranks fifth among the Pacific coast and the United States in total freight handling at the Long Beach, the fourth largest in the U.S. combined with neighboring Los Angeles ports. Foreign cargo volume is ranked fifth in the U.S. alone at Long Beach Port, and second in total to Los Angeles after Houston Port.
Container freight from Asia and other sources are transported to the United States via train networks and trailers such as the Union Pacific Railway from Long Beach and the Los Angeles port container terminal. To speed up transportation and ease traffic congestion, a high speed cargo route called the Alameda Corridor was built at a huge expense between Long Beach Port and Los Angeles Port and the Los Angeles Railway Terminal.
aviation
Long Beach Airport, which has a factory of Boeing Co., Ltd. (formerly McDonnell Douglas Corporation), is a base airport on the west coast of Jet Blue Airlines and operates Delta Airlines and Frontier Airlines. However, because the capacity of passenger terminals is small for the size of the city, major airlines such as American Airlines and Southwest Airlines and the international lines use their neighboring Los Angeles International Airport.
Many major airlines also use neighboring John Wayne Airport. An Amtrak bus runs to Union Station in Los Angeles, from which you can take a long-distance train or a suburban train.
road
The freeways that travel horizontally and vertically across the Los Angeles metropolitan area also reach Long Beach. The interstate highway, called the San Diego Highway, runs east-west through the city on a branch line of I-5 running north-south along the Pacific coast to reach the high-tech San Fernando Valley, the resort area Santa Monica and Los Angeles International Airport. Long Beach Highway, I-710, a branch of I-10, which crosses the continent and leads to Florida, runs north to south in the city and joins I-10 in the east suburb of Los Angeles.
railroad
Long Beach is the end of the Los Angeles light rail, the blue line, which was completed in 1990. The station is near the downtown city hall and is accessible. However, security needs attention to the traffic in the slums of Watts and Compton. If you change to the red line at the end, you can go to Union Station or Hollywood. At Imperial Wilmington Station on the way, you can change to the green line that leads to Los Angeles International Airport. In addition, there is a station called Long Beach Station on the green line, but this is 'Long Beach Boulevard,' so it is not in Long Beach City, so be careful not to confuse them.
Bus
As for traffic in the city, the route bus operated by the Long Beach Transportation Bureau runs vertically and horizontally in the city. There is also a Greyhound bus terminal in downtown, where buses connecting Los Angeles and San Diego stop.
sightseeing
Sightseeing facilities are scattered mainly along the coast. The most famous of them are "Queen Mary", a luxury liner used as a hotel and mooring, and "Long Beach Grand Prix," a city race held every spring.
There are large aquariums and convention centers in the downtown area, attracting visitors. In recent years, the 'The Pike' has opened in the redevelopment area, which straddles downtown and marina, with the restaurant, the cine complex, and the shopping mall and hotels in the center, making the area more crowded, especially on weekends.
sport
Long Beach Grand Prix
The Long Beach Grand Prix, a city race, is held every spring using the downtown street (Long Beach Urban Course). F1 America West GP was held from 1976 to 1983, and the layout was changed to a minute, and it is used as a course for the CART (later Champ Car) (until 2008) and the Indy Car Series (from 2009).
Marina
It has a marina, and many yachts and cruises are used.
security
It has the image that it is not safe because it is adjacent to the port area, but in reality, the crime rate is not very high. Never appeared in the Worst 25 ranking of "Dangerous Cities in the United States" at Morgan Quitno. In the 2001 rankings of the crime rate for all 327 cities, Long Beach ranked 122nd, below San Francisco (116th), which is considered to be a good public order.

However, there are Japanese community centers and Buddhist temples in the city even today.
gay lesbian
Long Beach is also generous with LGBT, and has many gay and lesbian customers. In May or June every year, a parade called Long Beach Pride is held.
