Members of Long Beach’s transgender community will gather to celebrate, and advocate for their rights, during a special event on Friday, March 30.

Trans Day of Visibility was originally established in 2009 by trans activist Rachel Crandall-Crocker, who is a co-founder and current head of advocacy group Transgender Michigan.

Since its creation more than a decade ago, Trans Day of Visibility has grown in popularity — with events to both honor and celebrate the lives of trans folks, while also acknowledging that discrimination still prevents many people from coming out and living authentically.

The day is now celebrated around the world annually on March 31, including here locally, where the LGBTQ Center of Long Beach will host an event in honor of Trans Day of Visibility — albeit about a week before the official day itself.

The Center’s Trans Day of Visibility event will kick off at Bixby Park, 130 Cherry Ave., on Saturday, March 20.

This free community-wide event intends to celebrate Long Beach’s local trans community — and will offer guest speakers, music by DJ Jayne and Mariachi Arcoiris de Los Angeles, free HIV and STI testing, drag performances and a community resource fair.

“Through this event,” the event’s website said, “we strive to create a safe and inclusive space where transgender people and their allies can gather, share their stories, and empower one another.”

For more information about Transgender Day of Visibility, which will run from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, visit the LGBTQ Center of Long Beach’s website.
