Hundreds of trinket diehards just gathered in Long Beach. Here's why they are so obsessed
The trinket economy has hit Long Beach. Ahead of Halloween, local collectors gathered in Heartwell Park to buy, sell, trade, or just show off their next figurine. The fourth annual Trinketween Picnic took place in Long Beach, California, on the last Sunday before Halloween. About 200 enthusiasts gathered to showcase their trinket collections, focusing on Sonny Angel figures. The event was started by Monique Fraile, who also started her dessert business, Momoz Berries, and hosted her first Sonny Angel community pop-up event in 2023. She now hosts a monthly trinkete meet-up in Heartwell Park. The business of trinkets has grown into a billion-dollar industry, with Pop Mart reporting record revenue of $5.38 billion for the 2025 fiscal year. Critics and mental health experts argue that blind boxes could negatively impact collectors, especially young children.
