LONG BEACH, CA — Holey Grail, a taro donut shop with a cult following of enthusiastic customers who line up for hours for their donuts, is celebrating its Long Beach store's grand opening on Saturday.
The first 50 guests in line at the store in Belmont Shore at 4803 2nd St will get a free drink and a gift bag. The grand opening will feature a vinyl DJ, coffee and chocolate tastings and a new "Breaking Bread" flavor collaboration. Holey Grail will also be donating 10 percent of the profits of the day to the LGBTQ Center In Long Beach.
The store began in 2018 serving hand-fried taro donuts from a small trailer in Hanalei, Kauai, where it developed into a community movement. Once it gained popularity, people began lining up at the trailer at 6 a.m. every day to eat the new flavors Holey Grail created. The unique donuts are made of Taro, an ancient root crop grown throughout the tropics and a culturally significant food in Hawaii. Taro is considered one of the most digestible forms of starch, Holey Grail said, because it is rich in calcium, potassium, iron and antioxidants.
The company prides itself on prioritizing sustainability, using organic and fair-trade ingredients from local farms and 100 percent compostable packaging. The store's tasting menu changes every Thursday. The Long Beach store will be open daily from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
