Students, parents, and staff at Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD) returned to schools on August 30, 2023, marking the start of the 2023-2024 academic year. LBUSD, the fourth-largest school district in California, oversees over 84 schools with a student enrollment of more than 65,800 in Long Beach, Lakewood, Signal Hill, and Avalon.

Superintendent Jill A. Baker warmly greeted students at Garfield Elementary School, where she served as the principal from 1998 to 2005. Mayor Rex Richardson also visited Garfield Elementary, expressing his excitement for the start of the school year and the fresh opportunities it brings for students.

LBUSD received approximately $10.7 million in funding from the state to enhance K-12 arts education. This funding comes as a result of Proposition 28, which mandates the establishment of arts programs in schools starting from the 2023-2024 school year. Baker emphasized that elementary, middle, and high schools in the district will see increased arts offerings, including dance, music, and vocal programs.

In addition to the arts, LBUSD is focusing on student well-being this year. The district has expanded wellness centers in middle and high schools and is implementing reading intervention programs at elementary schools. There is also an emphasis on social-emotional learning curriculums for teachers to support the emotional needs of students.

Furthermore, LBUSD is investing in infrastructure improvements with the help of COVID relief funds. The district is halfway through a furniture-replacement effort, which includes upgrading technology, installing water stations, providing shade structures, and replacing classroom furniture. This investment amounts to approximately $60 million.

Despite a slight increase in COVID cases in Los Angeles County, both Baker and Mayor Richardson are confident in the protocols implemented LBUSD to ensure the safety of staff, families, teachers, and students. The district encourages families to wear masks, especially if they have health conditions at home.

With a spirit of teamwork and partnership, Long Beach is working closely with LBUSD to prepare schools for heat advisories, provide cooling centers, and support after-school programs and libraries.

As the new school year begins, the Long Beach Unified School District is dedicated to providing a nurturing and enriching educational experience for its students while prioritizing their well-being and safety.
