California State University Long Beach is building a new dorm that will bring more than 420 new beds to the campus, most will be set aside for affordable housing.

The affordable beds will be spread out across campus. KNX News’ Margaret Carrero spoke with Corry Colonna, the executive director of Housing and Residential Life at CSULB, about the new dorms.

“The students will apply for housing as they will and we'll have some different criteria to decide who are those students that have the greatest need,” he said. “But we want to give students an opportunity for choice and we have our new residence hall here.”

He said they’re spreading out the affordable dorms because they don’t want to have a building that would create some sort of stigma around financial situations.

“We're really happy about that because it will give us a great opportunity to protect students from any kind of stigma and still be able to receive the benefit of housing,” Colonna said.

The new dorm building, CSULB’s 22nd residence hall, is called “La Playa” and will have three towers. The building will bring the total number of beds across campus to more than 3,600.

It’s expected to be ready to house students by the fall of 2026.
