Officials arrested a Long Beach man at his residence early Wednesday morning on a federal criminal complaint alleging he traveled with a 14-year-old girl from Arizona across state lines.

The complaint also accuses the man, 32-year-old Nathaniel Langstaff, of engaging in criminal sexual activity with her at his apartment, according to an announcement from the Justice Department Thursday.

Langstaff was charged with transportation of a minor with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity, after initially contacting the girl on a Reddit internet forum.

According to the affidavit filed with the complaint, law enforcement officials received a report of a missing 14-year-old girl who ran away from her Arizona home Tuesday after her family discovered her missing that morning.

The victim's family looked for the girl in their neighborhood and contacted family and friends to find her whereabouts. The family discovered that the girl said she was planning to run away one week earlier, and that she had told a friend she met a man who harbored runaways. He told her he would give her a cellphone and room to stay in and he currently had two other teenagers staying with him, according to the affidavit.

The Reddit forum that Langstaff met the victim on was allegedly for runaways and there were multiple contacts between the girl and Langstaff leading up to her departure, according to the affidavit.

Law enforcement officials visited Langstaff's apartment in Long Beach early Wednesday morning to locate and rescue the girl. The affidavit alleges they found her hidden in a closet.

The girl said she and Langstaff engaged in sexual contact after they arrived at his residence.

Langstaff was scheduled to make an initial appearance Thursday afternoon in a United States District Court in downtown Los Angeles. If convicted, Langstaff would face a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in federal prison and a statutory maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

The FBI and the Long Beach Police Department investigated the incident.
