Martinrex Kedziora receives the inaugural Excellence in Education award. Martinrex Kedziora, former superintendent of Moreno Valley Unified School District, has won the Freedom Writers Foundation's first Excellence in Education award. The award was given at a ceremony in Long Beach on March 16, where Kedmiora was recognized for his work in creating inclusive classrooms and reducing the achievement gap. He left his position in September 2023 after he was terminated by the school board. The foundation works to empower educators and students through innovative teaching, promoting diversity and inclusion, and fostering a love for learning.

Moreno Valley’s former superintendent has won a new award from The Freedom Writers Foundation.

Martinrex Kedziora received the foundation’s first Excellence in Education award during a Saturday, March 16, ceremony in Long Beach.

Kedziora is “a longtime advocate for equity and inclusion and a lauded Freedom Writer Teacher” who displayed “exceptional educational leadership and enduring dedication to creating equal opportunities for all students,” a foundation news release states.

Kedziora left the Moreno Valley Unified School District in September 2023, after he was terminated by the school board.

During Kedziora’s tenure, Moreno Valley students contributed to the book, “Dear Freedom Writer: Stories of Hardship and Hope from the Next Generation.”

The foundation recognized Kedziora for his work to create inclusive classrooms and close the achievement gap, the release states.

Erin Gruwell, founder of the Freedom Writers Foundation, lauded Kedziora for “his unwavering commitment to educational equity and his profound impact on students and educators,” according to the release.

Gruwell, an English teacher, led her Long Beach high school students more than 20 years ago in writing diaries about their lives and experiences, which led to the Freedom Writers and the nonprofit Freedom Writers Foundation.

The foundation works to empower educators and students using innovative teaching, promoting diversity and inclusion and fostering a love for learning, the release states.
