Comedian Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias will headline this year’s Keys to the City recipients, alongside Samuel “Skip” and Beth Keesal, and Rev. Dr. Leon and Paula Wood, Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson announced on Tuesday, June 11.

“Each of these extraordinary people represent the best of Long Beach, whether it be through philanthropy, service to the community, or representing our city to the world at large,” Richardson said in a statement. “We are thrilled to celebrate their contribution to our community.”

Richardson will present Iglesias with his key during a special free, low-cost performance at the Terrace Theater at 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, with comedian Martin Moreno as the opening act.

Long Beach residents ages 16 to 24 years old have the opportunity to attend the performance for free by requesting a ticket from their City Council District office.

Public general admission tickets are $15 and now on sale via Ticketmaster.

Partial proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the Mayor’s Fund for Long Beach in support of the STRONG Beach Initiative, according to the city’s press release.

Before the show, there will also be a youth-focused job and resource fair, food trucks, and more starting at 6:30 p.m.

“I’m honored to be recognized by my hometown in this way, and I’m proud to be able to support Long Beach’s youth at the same time,” Iglesias said in a statement. “If you’re a kid growing up in a tough situation, you might not believe that there’s a whole other world out there waiting for you – but there is. I’m proof of that, and you can be too.”

Iglesias is the youngest of six children, raised by a single mother in Long Beach. It was during his childhood that he developed a strong sense of humor to deal with the obstacles he faced and in 1997, he set out to hone his comedic skills and performed stand-up anywhere he could, according to a press release.

He is known for his two stand-up comedy specials on Netflix, called “One Show Fits All,” and “Stadium Fluffy.” Iglesias is one of the world’s most successful stand-up comedians, recently becoming the second-highest grossing touring comic.

Iglesias also served as the grand marshal for the 2024 Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach.

The four other Keys to the City recipients will be honored during the Tuesday, July 16, City Council meeting.

The Kessals have dedicated themselves to the local and national communities by supporting numerous charitable and civic projects, and have served on numerous boards of charitable organizations, the city’s announcement said.

Leon Wood is the founder and president of Success in Challenges, a nonprofit social service agency largely serving the greater Long Beach community. Paula Wood is executive director of that nonprofit and has more than 30 years of experience working with families and youth with other organizations, including Long Beach YWCA, Children’s Home Society of Long Beach, Christian Outreal Appeal and the United Way.
